The Institute of Computer Engineering (ZITI) at Heidelberg University invites applications for a Junior Professorship (W1) in Applied Quantum Computing at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences with tentative starting date January 1st, 2023. This is a non-tenure-track W1 position for young scientists with a strong track-record after the doctorate. The position is limited to 6 years. This professorship is part of the core competence Innovative Computing at ZITI, which is concerned with unconventional solutions to demanding computing problems and covers research, development, and programming of specialized computer hardware (analog and digital), firmware, and hardware-efficient software. The professorship in Applied Quantum Computing is expected to collaboratively tackle the challenge to bring quantum information processing to applications. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: * Algorithms for quantum computing * Programming models and abstractions for quantum computing * Application towards machine learning and/or scientific-technical computing * Cloud-based quantum computing * System engineering for quantum computing Additional ties within ZITI can be established with the core competences Microelectronics and Robotics, Biomechanics & Medical Technology. Further collaboration opportunities at Heidelberg University are offered by the quantum activities of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, the cluster of excellence STRUCTURES, the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and the Institute for Molecular Systems Engineering and Advanced Materials (IMSEAM). The successful applicant will contribute to the Master program Computer Engineering as well as the Bachelor program Computer Science. Prerequisites for the application are a university degree and a doctorate in a related scientific field. Candidates should generally not have spent more than six years in total of employment as a doctoral and postdoctoral researcher in Germany (see Article 51 of the Higher Education Law of the State of Baden-Württemberg).
