Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics

Apply for this job

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena conducts applied research in optical system technology on behalf of the industry and as part of publicly funded joint projects. The range of services offered by the Fraunhofer IOF includes system solutions, starting with new design concepts, through the development of technologies, manufacturing and measuring methods to the construction of prototypes and pilot series for applications in the wavelength range from millimeter to nanometer. We are looking for a group leader for the department »Emerging Technologies« to work on research topics in the field of quantum imaging. The group focuses on the development of quantum imaging components and systems. As a branch of quantum optics, the ultimate performance limits of optical imaging made possible by the laws of quantum mechanics are explored. Using the methods and techniques of quantum optics, the group addresses issues of imaging, processing, and detection with sensitivity and resolution. Quantum mechanically entangled light particles overcome the limitations of classical optics and allow insights into previously invisible wavelength ranges. Thus, they offer new possibilities for imaging techniques, microscopy, and spectroscopy. The long-term challenge is to explore these possibilities and to develop technological solutions for research and industry. What you will do - Acquisition and processing of projects from public and industrial clients - Independent planning and implementation of scientific analyses for imaging optical systems - Carrying out research (publications, patent searches) Documentation and presentation of research results at national and international conferences - Supervision and guidance of scientific, technical staff in different projects - Supervision of student theses What you bring to the table - Completed doctoral degree in physics or a related field - Experience in independently writing project proposals to various funding institutions - Demonstrated experience in project management of interdisciplinary teams - Theoretical and experimental experience in quantum technologies - Knowledge in building new optical/quantum optical systems for different applications - Very good knowledge of German and English - Leadership and teamwork skills as well as a high degree of independence and determination What you can expect - Working in a collegial, open-minded team at a well- equipped workplace - Personal and professional development opportunities in challenging R&D projects - Networking with leading industry partners and research groups - Access to state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure e.g., fiber and laser technology, micro- and nanostructure technology, surface functionalization (very well-equipped optics labs) - Flexible working hours and a family-friendly workplace - Cooperation with a local day care center - Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to three years. We are looking for a long-term cooperation. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future. Interested? Apply online now.
