Research fellow / PhD position in experimental physics on accurate BEC interferometry for geodesy (m/w/d)
Leibniz Universität Hannover, Inst. f. Q
Apply for this jobSimilar to the development of lasers for interferometry in optics, employing Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) renders a decisive step forward for atom interferometry. In our research group we are investigating this next generation of BEC interferometers and have already set important milestones, promising a uniquely high accuracy for acceleration measurements. In particular, we succeeded in miniaturisation, leading to our novel transportable quantum gravimeter for measuring Earth’s gravitational acceleration. As part of the scientific activities, measurement campaigns are to be carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Geodesy at LUH at geodetically relevant locations. New methods and the physics of quantum gravimetry need to be investigated, e.g. the influence of inner-atomic collisions within a BEC and the effect of blackbody radiation on the measuring principle. Embedded into the CRC TerraQ, in cooperation with DLR-SI and based on the QUEST Leibniz Research School as well as the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, we offer outstanding opportunities for personal advancement with a variety of national and international collaborations.
How to apply
A completed scientific university degree in physics or equivalent related disciplines is a prerequisite for application. Good knowledge of atom and quantum optics is recommended and excellent academic performance is expected. Experience in laser physics, electronics, programming, and/or gravitational physics is helpful, but not mandatory. The university aims to promote equality between women and men. For this purpose, the university strives to reduce under-representation in areas where a certain gender is under-represented. Women are under-represented in the salary scale of the advertised position. Therefore, qualified women are encouraged to apply. Moreover, we welcome applications from qualified men. Preference will be given to equally-qualified applicants with disabilities. Please submit your full application with supporting documents until May 31st, 2022 to: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover Institut für Quantenoptik Herrn Dr. Waldemar Herr Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover For further information, please contact Dr. Waldemar Herr (Email: herr@iqo.uni-hannover.de).
