Postdoc on COMPLEX QUANTUM SYSTEMS

IFISC (CSIC_UIB)

We look for talented and motivated candidates with experience in open quantum systems, quantum information or computing, and/or statistical physics, to join us with a postdoctoral research position at the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems IFISC (UIB-CSIC), Palma, Mallorca (Spain). We offer a 2-year contract starting by fall 2024 (approx.) associated with the project “CoCuSy” (PID2022-140506NB-C21 & C22) funded by “Agencia Estatal de Investigación” (Spanish government) and led by PIs Prof. Roberta Zambrini, Dr. Gian-Luca Giorgi and Dr. Gonzalo Manzano. Possibilities to extend the contract beyond 2 years may be explored.

The project research lines are within the broad context of complex quantum systems. The successful candidate will focus on preferably two of the following topics:

-        Open Quantum Systems. We study emergent phenomena in OQS such as time-crystal phase transitions, irreversibility, and the spreading of information in quantum measurement schemes, and complex quantum networks.

-        Quantum Thermodynamics. We develop connections between quantum information and thermodynamics with an emphasis in determining the role of quantum effects in thermodynamic operation and beyond, down to the level of fluctuations.

-        Quantum Neural Networks. We seek quantum advantage in associative memory and their applications in quantum technologies. We also explore improvements of variational quantum algorithms in the context of complex quantum networks.

-        Quantum Reservoir Computing. We are developing a full theoretical framework for this quantum machine learning approach, with application to quantum tasks, design of optimal reservoirs, estimation of needed resources, and proposal of experimental implementations, mainly in photonic platforms.

The host institute (IFISC) offers a stimulating environment for the training of young scientists, with a program of weakly seminars, group meetings, journal clubs, conference participation, visits to leading researchers, and outreach activities.

Previous experience on the topics of the project as well as scientific independence and ability to work in a group will be valuable.

How to apply

Interested candidates, please send a motivation letter (max 1 page) and a CV with the contact of two/three senior researchers willing to provide a recommendation letter. The deadline for applications is February 28th, 2024.
