The ML4Q Undergraduate Research Internship Program offers the opportunity to work closely with one of our research groups in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Jülich. This program provides valuable insights and experience in cutting-edge quantum research.

About ML4Q

'Matter and Light for Quantum Computing' (ML4Q https://ml4q.de/) is an Excellence Cluster funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Excellence Strategy. The cluster is a collaboration between the universities of Cologne, Aachen, Bonn, and Düsseldorf, as well as the Forschungszentrum Jülich. ML4Q is focused on developing innovative computing and networking architectures using the principles of quantum mechanics, while also preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers in quantum technology.

Summer 2025 Internship Opportunities

We are offering up to seven internships, each lasting 10–12 weeks, for summer 2025. These internships will provide you with the opportunity to get involved in ongoing research within the ML4Q network. Alongside your research, you will also participate in seminars, workshops, and ML4Q meetings across various locations, allowing you to meet fellow students, researchers, and professionals in the field. This offers an excellent chance to expand your professional network.

International students will be enrolled at the University of Cologne, giving them access to university resources and the opportunity to experience student life in Germany.

How to apply

To apply for the program please fill in the online form on the internship website . In addition to providing the information requested in the form, you will have to upload the following documents combined into a SINGLE PDF file:

  • Your CV,
  • Motivation letter of max. 1 page (2500 characters)
  • Transcript of Records (from your completed semesters, if you just started your MSc program, please submit transcript of your BSc study and list of course to be completed in current semester)
  • Contact details (name, academic affiliation, e-mail address) of the academic referee (e.g. professor you took courses with, your program coordinator…) who can provide a letter of reference for you. We will contact this person at the later stage to provide a recommendation letter.
