The Quantum Optics Kit (+ entanglement sneak-peak)
Dr. Jens Küchenmeister will present an experimental kit from Educational Products from Thorlabs GmbH. The Quantum Optics Kit offers a completely open system to experimentally introduce students to the fundamentals of quantum physics. A main design goal for the kit was for students to set up the entire experiment by themselves. In the talk, we present the kit, its applications and how the alignment is facilitated.
First, a non-classical light source is set up to generate correlated photon pairs. Next, the 2nd order auto-correlation is measured to verify the quantum nature of the light source. Once that is established, experiments such as the single photon Michelson interferometer and the quantum eraser are possible. Extensions to the kit are the single photon double slit and a simple 2-qubit optical quantum computer.
We will also tease the soon-to-be-released polarization-entanglement add-on, which allows you to easily extend the Quantum Optics kit and measure the violation of Bell’s inequality.
