Opportunities at European level

On 5 May 2025, the European Union launched the “Choose Europe for Science” initiative to strengthen Europe’s position as a global leader in research and to attract the most talented scientists from around the world. This initiative complements and enhances the EU’s flagship programmes under Horizon Europe, including the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

Key opportunities include:
  • ERC – increased start-up funding for researchers relocating to Europe:
Researchers relocating from outside the EU who apply for ERC individual grants can now receive up to an additional €2 million in funding to cover start-up costs such as personnel, equipment, and access to research facilities. The new €500 million ERC Super Grant initiative (2025-2027) also extends the duration of selected grants to seven years, providing a stronger foundation for ambitious long-term projects.
  • MSCA – Choose Europe for Science pilot:
A dedicated pilot programme within MSCA, launched under the “Choose Europe for Science” banner, offers extended postdoctoral fellowships and encourages host institutions to provide long-term career perspectives for young researchers. With a budget of €22.5 million, this programme aims to attract, retain, and empower the next generation of scientific leaders.

In addition, the initiative introduces new legal guarantees to protect academic freedom and safeguard independent research across the EU. Member States are also complementing these measures with national commitments, such as France’s €100 million programme to support incoming researchers.

Together, these measures underscore Europe’s dedication to open, inclusive, and world-leading science, making it an attractive destination for researchers seeking excellence, stability, and impact.

Opportunities at national level

In addition to the European Union’s flagship programmes, many EU Member States provide their own targeted funding schemes to attract and support international researchers. These national initiatives complement European funding by offering additional financial resources, tailored fellowship programmes, and institutional support for researchers at all career stages.

Examples include dedicated relocation packages, national research grants, and specific initiatives to strengthen priority fields such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and life sciences. Several countries also provide long-term career perspectives through tenure-track positions, research chairs, and dedicated funding for international collaborations.

National-level programmes thus offer researchers a valuable opportunity to access resources adapted to local research ecosystems while benefiting from Europe’s strong commitment to excellence, innovation, and academic freedom.
