In human interactions, harm is an inevitable factor. However, power imbalances can amplify both the actual harm inflicted and the potential for harm, obstructing efforts to establish social safety nets. Therefore, a deep understanding is crucial in achieving the goal of fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive European quantum ecosystem.
Scientific gatherings and workforce development play pivotal roles in cultivating collaboration and attracting a diverse pool of talent. Yet, institutional, financial, and social barriers often hinder accessibility for scientists from diverse backgrounds. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) guidelines for scientific events, authored by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Working Group (EDI-WG) of the Quantum Flagship, aim to ensure equitable representation and diverse participation in scientific meetings. Recognising that promoting equity and inclusion is an ongoing commitment, continuous public feedback on these guidelines is encouraged.
The EDI survey conducted by the Quantum Flagship took place from 20 May to 30 June 2023, garnering 281 responses – a decline from the 748 responses in the 2019/20 survey. The survey questions were crafted to capture a spectrum of perspectives on EDI, independent of the views of the Quantum Flagship or the EDI-WG. Notably, 80% of respondents highlighted the need for intensified efforts to enhance equity and inclusiveness across various dimensions, including race, background, and sexuality. Responses to what the Quantum Flagship could do to advance EDI commonly suggested increased funding, heightened awareness, policy establishment, conference organisation, and guideline provision. This feedback underscores a community-wide call for robust, proactive measures to cultivate a more inclusive environment within the quantum technology sector.
Quantum Flagship aims to position Europe as a leader in quantum science and technology. Achieving this goal necessitates the ability to attract and retain diverse quantum talent while exemplifying best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion. The EDI-WG at Quantum Flagship seeks to support these objectives and invites interested parties to engage with their initiatives.
