Two PhD fellowships in Theoretical Quantum Optics and Quantum Information

University of Copenhagen

Apply for this job

The Niels Bohr Institute invites applicants for two PhD fellowships in Theoretical Quantum Optics and Quantum Information.  The projects will be part of the Center for Hybrid quantum Networks (Hy-Q), which aims at making quantum networks based on single photons sources and mechanical oscillators.

Start date is (expected to be) August 1st, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The projects

The projects will focus physical implementation of quantum information processing. One project will be about devising theories for how to perform quantum simulation of the dynamics of molecules using photon emitters in waveguides. The second project will be defined in collaboration with the successful candidate. Possible topics include scalable quantum computation with photon emitters, quantum sensing, optomechanical systems and transductions between microwave and optical frequencies.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of Physis or related areas. Applicants can have a background from theoretical quantum optics or quantum information theory but we will also consider candidates with different backgrounds.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?

The Theoretical Quantum Optics group focus on devloping theries for how to implement quantum information processing. The group consists of approximately 10 Ph.D. and post docs as well as a few master students. We have a close collaboration with local experimental groups and have recently been focusing on implementation of quantum information processing based on single photon emitters.

The group is a part the Quantum Optics Section, the Niels bohr Institute, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen.

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment with strong collaboration with local experimental groups.

Principal supervisor is Prof. Anders Søndberg Sørensen, The Niels Bohr Institute, anders.sorensen@nbi.ku.dk .

The PhD programme

To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. Physics or quantum Information. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Responsibilities and tasks in PhD programme

  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

We are looking for the following qualifications:

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Relevant publications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Other relevant professional activities
  • Curious mind-set with a strong interest in Quantum Optics and Quantum Information
  • Good language skills
