Are you enthusiastic about quantum computers and software technology? Join us in shaping the future of quantum computing!

Our team, Quantum algorithms and software at VTT, is on a mission to explore near-term quantum applications and develop cutting-edge software solutions. We actively contribute to the development of VTT's quantum computers, maintaining the software stack for seamless execution, and providing access to academic and commercial entities. Our research spans topics such as error mitigation, quantum measurements, quantum machine learning, quantum finance, and quantum chemistry.

We are looking for an experienced software developer, who will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining the service software for our quantum computers. You’ll work closely with fellow developers/researchers servicing our platform and engage with researchers dedicated to advancing quantum algorithms and hardware. Demonstrate your ability to tackle challenges while working seamlessly independently and creatively with the team members. Prioritize the tasks of software design and development while maintaining a holistic understanding of the project, offering valuable input and ideas across various components. You'll have the opportunity to grow into a leadership role as well. While a background in quantum computing is not mandatory, we seek individuals who possess a genuine interest in the potential of quantum computing and are eager to learn more about this groundbreaking field.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the development of Finland’s quantum computer ecosystem, which will be available for quantum algorithm development. VTT is a member of leading European quantum technology research projects such as OpenSuperQ+, QMiCS and NordIQuEst as well as national initiatives, for example, Quantum Technology Finland, and FiQCI.

With us, you will be responsible for

  • Managing software development, breaking down implementations into manageable subtasks, and delegating tasks to team members.
  • Defining project requirements, documenting design choices, and specifying project details.
  • Designing, maintaining, and improving the quantum computer service for commercial and research users.
  • Communicating with stakeholders and collaborating on national and international projects.

Who we are looking for

  • A degree in computer science, computer engineering, physics, or electronic engineering, with at least 3-5 years of programming and software development experience.
  • A willingness to grow into a leadership position.
  • Familiarity with Linux, networking, application deployment, infrastructure management, CI/CD, Git, CLI, and Docker.
  • Knowledge of REST APIs, database design, authentication, and authorization solutions (e.g., OIDC/OAuth).
  • Experience with responsive web applications (e.g., React, Next.js, Typescript).
  • Strong systematic thinking and adherence to good software development practices, including unit and integration tests.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Ideally, you have a background that includes:

  • Full-stack development experience, managing both front-end and back-end aspects.
  • Experience with HPC environments, including SLURM, scheduling, resource management, and GPU programming.
  • Knowledge of the basics of quantum computing or quantum mechanics.
  • Linux server administration skills.

What we offer you:

  • Visionary work in technology. We offer positions at the cutting edge of technology and engineering from next-generation microelectronics and quantum technology to automation and robotics, energy systems, and more. Our research agenda is dedicated to creating sustainable growth by solving systemic and technological challenges, so your work will go towards creating a real, positive impact.
