The Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) aims to secure Europe’s future supply of nano-electronic chips, by catalysing research, development and manufacturing capabilities. While the main focus is to boost the EU semiconductor industry, other types of chips also play a key role, such as photonic integrated circuits and quantum chips.
The first two dedicated Chips JU calls for quantum chips have now been announced, and they will fund pilot lines for quantum chips focussed on stability and trapped ions, respectively. In both cases the calls are open for application from 24 September 2024 until 21 January 2025. More information can be found in the call documents via the Chips JU website.
The ‘stability’ pilot line call will fund two FPAs with €20-25 million each (as a contribution during a first SGA of each project), while the trapped ions call is expected to fund one FPA with €15 million similarly.
Meanwhile, a €116mil call to establish Chips Competence Centers in the EU is still open until 2 October 2024, and it specifies quantum chips as a possible area of expertise for such a centre.
