Postdoctoral position on strontium quantum-gas microscopy

ICFO - Ultracold Quantum Gases Group

Apply for this job

The experimental Ultracold Quantum Gases group at ICFO (Barcelona) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate the magnetic phases of the SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model. This position is part of the Quantum Flagship project in Quantum Simulation PASQuanS2 (https://pasquans2.eu/).

During the postdoc, you will investigate variants of the Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, a cornerstone model of condensed matter physics that describes strongly-correlated materials, quantum magnets, and possibly high-temperature superconductors, using uItracold strontium atoms in optical lattices. Specifically, we are interested in exploring the SU(N)-symmetric variant of the model, for which intricate magnetic orders and exotic spin liquid phases have been predicted. To this end, our group has developed a quantum-gas microscope that allows us to perform single-atom and single-site resolved fluorescence images of strontium Hubbard systems for the first time [Buob et al., PRX Quantum 5, 020316 (2024)]. In yet unpublished work, we have demonstrated spin-resolved imaging of fermionic systems with N up to 10, which promises unprecedented access to SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard systems.

We are looking for candidates with a good background in both AMO and condensed-matter physics. A PhD in the field of ultracold atoms/ions is required, and previous experience on degenerate Fermi gases, optical lattices, or two-electron atoms will be highly valued. We offer a three-year postdoctoral contract in a dynamical experimental group, with excellent working conditions, a unique experimental setup, and established theory collaborations on the topic.

How to apply

To apply, upload all required documents at jobs.icfo.eu, and send as well your CV and the name of two people who could provide letters of recommendation to Prof. Leticia Tarruell: leticia.tarruell@icfo.eu
