We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow (f/d/m) to take on the scientific and technical responsibility for the development of a complex laser system as part of the project BECCAL.

BECCAL is a large joint endeavor by NASA and DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) to implement a user facility for experiments with ultra-cold quantum gases of Rubidium and Potassium on the international space station ISS.

Depending on the background and research interests, the work might be extended to cover experiments with ultra-cold quantum gases and dual species atom interferometry on sounding rockets or other micro-gravity platforms.

Job description:

  • scientific services for research in the BECCAL project
  • responsibility for assembly, characterization and operation of the BECCAL laser system (including integration into the full BECCAL assembly)
  • work closely with and coordinate other postdoctoral fellows, doctoral candidates and Masters students
  • interact intensively with partners in the BECCAL collaboration, including the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and other NASA facilities in the USA
  • support aspects of product assurance and space qualification
  • participate in experiments with ultra-cold Rubidium and Potassium
  • present research results in international journals and conferences as well as to relevant project stakeholders

Requirements:

  • completed academic degree (master or similar) and Ph.D./doctoral degree (completed or thesis already submitted) in physics (or in related fields with appropriate specialization)
  • expertise in the development and/or characterization of laser systems for laser cooling or precision measurement applications
  • willingness and ability to work with NASA partners at locations in the USA
  • good team spirit and ability to work effectively in a collaboration

Beneficial qualifications:

  • practical experience with ultra-cold quantum gases and/or atom interferometry
  • experience in computer aided design (preferably Autodesk)
  • programming skills (preferably with experience in Python)
  • good knowledge of analog and digital electronics
  • leadership skills and experience
  • knowledge of space design and safety standards
  • gender and diversity sensitivity
