VTT Technical Research Center

We are looking for an ambitious and results-oriented researcher with a strong background in semiconductor physics, electronics and photonics. As a researcher at VTT, you will have a key role in the development of new detector technologies that rely on light-matter interactions over a wide spectral range, from X-ray to far IR and possibly beyond those. You identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly with a team of experts. You focus on the design and fabrication aspects of the process and participate in the characterization. You understand the big picture and provide input in the concept development.
In this position, you have the opportunity to develop novel sensor concepts and detection principles in international research environment and participate in the development of VTT’s already established product lines and new initiatives in close collaboration with the global sensors industry. Your work will have a connection to large European research initiatives Graphene Flagship and Quantum Flagship where VTT has a strong role, and can include integration with VTT’s other core technologies in hyperspectral imaging, silicon photonics, AI solutions and quantum computing.
With us, you will be responsible for:
– Photo- or thermal detector concept and process development with the basis on silicon junction detectors, or on thermo-, piezo- and pyroelectric membranes
– Detector design, fabrication and process integration in our extensive cleanroom
– Identifying and solving the key issues within your domain of expertise
– Communicating and solving those issues in tight collaboration with others at VTT
– Communicating and solving problems with external partners
We expect you to have:
We are looking for a person with experience in semiconductor physics and process integration, and a master’s or PhD level degree in physics, photonics, materials science or electrical engineering, or other field connected closely to photo- or thermal detectors. Your background and interests are primarily in the experimental work, although numerical modeling and practical programming skills are certainly welcome. You are proficient in English.
Ideally, your background includes following:
– Master’s degree or Ph.D. in experimental physics, materials science, or a related field
– At least 2 years of experience in research on semiconductor devices (e.g. pn-junction detectors, transistors, MEMS, membranes, SAW/BAW) from the point of view of process integration
– At least basic programming and characterization skills
