The quantum technology community in Europe is large and diverse. Originally, it has been rooted in academic research, mostly in physics but also in mathematics, chemistry, and computer science. Within physics, it is mostly based on the areas of optics, photonics, atomic physics, solid-state physics, and nanotechnology.
With applications getting closer and closer, the community is expanding. It now includes research and technology organizations that bridge the path from academic research into applications. Moreover, there is already a significant industrial component to the quantum technology community. In fact, there are multiple industrial communities: Companies that make components and supporting technologies for quantum machines, companies that build quantum machines, but also companies interesting in using quantum technologies, in concrete products, or on the level of technology scouting. These companies come from technology-driven industries – optics, computers, cars, aerospace – and users of technology – chemicals, finance, software, and many more. Last, but not least, there is a quantum education and training community, working on communication quantum technologies and training a quantum-aware community of tomorrow. The quantum technology community is present in all European countries through the flagship’s quantum community network.
QuantERA is a European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) Cofund Programme in the field of Quantum Technologies (QT). It is an interdependent network of Research Funding Organisations, aiming to establish and develop new lines of Quantum Technologies through a coordinated action aiming to explore advanced multidisciplinary science and cutting-edge engineering. Our network of national and regional Research Funding Organisations spans over 31 countries.
