Scientist* for Photonic Quantum Technologies, Communications and Sensing

Fraunhofer HHI

Photonics is one of the most exciting and dynamic areas of applied research. Building on many years of technological experience, Fraunhofer HHI has established a leading global position in the field of integrated optoelectronic components. In addition to classical optical data transmission, these are increasingly being used in other future-oriented fields such as sensing, analytics, quantum communication and quantum information processing. The dynamics of this technology field opens up the scope for exciting scientific projects with clear application perspectives.
Your future responsibilities will be:
– Development, design, and modeling of integrated photonic components for quantum technologies, communications, and sensing
– Development and support of the manufacturing and assembly steps from chips to deployable modules
– Supervision of the metrological characterization of the components
– Support and further development of our measurement setups
– Participation in national and international research projects
– Carrying out development projects together with industry partners
The possibility of obtaining a PhD is provided. The detailed planning and familiarization with the subject will take place part-time during the first year. Thereafter, the number of hours is to be increased to a full position.
What we expect from you:
– Above-average university degree (master’s/diploma) in physics, electrical engineering or related fields of study
– Extensive knowledge of quantum mechanics as well as semiconductor physics, optics, or photonics
– Experience in optical and optoelectronic metrology
– Programming knowledge, ideally in LabVIEW or Python
– Interest in the development of technology, assembly and measurement techniques
We would also be pleased if you have a good command of German and English, the ability to work in a team, analytical thinking, a high level of motivation and initiative as well as an independent way of working.
What you can expect from us:
In our motivated group we address the challenges of hybrid integration of photonic functionalities based on active semiconductor components, passive waveguide networks and nonlinear optical devices. In this context, we are looking for your support to further expand our activities in the field of integrated optics for quantum technologies.
The broad application spectrum of the chips we develop ranges from classical optical data transmission to novel applications in quantum communication and quantum computing. From simulation, design, fabrication and metrological characterization, we can cover all development stages for innovative integrated optical components. Thus, we offer you the opportunity to work on a wide variety of exciting and application-oriented topics and to acquire a wealth of knowledge in the process. Our excellently equipped laboratories offer you every opportunity to do so. In addition to working on national and international research projects, you are guaranteed excellent contacts in the relevant industrial and scientific environment.
Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
The working time consists of 26 hours per week in the first year of the position.
The position is initially limited for 2 years.
In case of identical qualifications preference will be given to severely disabled candidates.
We would like to point out that the chosen job title also includes the third gender.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft emphasises gender-independent professional equality.
Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas.
