YOUR TASKS The professorship will be established in the field of quantum optimal control for solid-state quantum computing. The successful candidate will work with cutting-edge methods including analytical solutions, numerical optimisation, machine learning, and feedback control, in close proximity to experimental realizations of superconducting quantum information devices. The professor will participate in major European and German research initiatives in the field of quantum technologies. The University of Cologne and the Forschungszentrum Jülich collaborate within the Cluster of Excellence „Matter and Light for Quantum Computing“ (ML4Q), and prospective collaboration in this project is encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in theoretical physics. YOUR PROFILE Applicants should demonstrate experience in a combination of the aforementioned areas. They should also have an excellent track record in relevant theoretical techniques, with applications in, e.g., contemporary qubits or open-system dynamics. The successful applicant will head a research group at the Peter Grünberg Institute for Quantum Control of the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The appointment will be carried out jointly by both institutions. Teaching duties include two hours per week of lectures and tutorials at the University of Cologne, and the supervision of undergraduate and graduate theses. We aim to fill the position at the earliest possible date. It is initially limited to 5 years. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). The tenure decision for a permanent W2 professorship will be based on the results of a final evaluation to be held in the 5th year after entering into office in accordance with the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne.
