Research Scientist, Quantum Hardware Development

We are looking for an ambitious and results-oriented researcher with experience in nanofabrication and quantum technologies. As a researcher at VTT, you will have a key role in the development of new hardware components for superconducting sensors, parametric amplifiers, and quantum computers, with a focus on process scalability. You identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly with a team of experts.
In this position, you have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge quantum hardware in a booming environment. VTT is a member of leading European quantum technology research projects (OpenSuperQ,  QMiCS) as well as national initiatives (e.g. Quantum Technology Finland). Currently, VTT is building Finland’s first quantum computer in partnership with IQM Quantum Computers, with 20.7 million euros granted by the Finnish government for the purpose.
With us, you wil be responsible for:
– Design and fabrication of new hardware components with aid of professional cleanroom operators
– And depending on your interest, characterization of the components in our cryogenic measurement labs with a team of experts. 
– Identifying and solving the key issues within your domain of expertise. 
– Communicating and solving those issues in tight collaboration with others at VTT. 
– Communicating and solving problems with external partners. 
Who we are looking for:
– Master degree or Ph. D. in experimental physics, electrical engineering or related field
– At least 2 years of experience in research on your area of expertise
– Nanofabrication experience in few of the following techniques: lithography, thin film deposition, reactive ion etching, wet etching, flip-chip bonding, and optical, atomic force, and electron beam characterization means.
– Experience on superconducting quantum devices (or other related solid state devices)
– At least basic programming skills
– Proficiency in English. 
Ideally, your background includes the following:
– Device design experience
– Operation of a dilution refrigerator and low temperature characterization expertise
– Understanding of measurement techniques
– RF-design and measurements
– Numerical modeling
We are interested in both junior and senior professionals, but some practical working knowledge of at least one the following areas is needed: superconducting qubits, Josephson junction based devices, 3D-integration of superconducting devices, or superconducting hybrid circuits. Depending on your background and experience, it is possible to expand the responsibilities.
