PhD at TU Wien in quantum information theory/quantum computing

TU Wien, Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics (Atominstitut)

Are you a creative, curious, conscientious and highly motivated young scholar who wants to become part of an open-minded, sociable, interdisciplinary and diverse team of scientists at the forefront of research in quantum theory and quantum technologies? Then apply to join our team!
We seek candidates for a 3-year PhD position at the Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics (Atominstitut) of TU Wien to work on a theory project led by Nicolai Friis at the intersection of quantum information, quantum computing, and machine learning, with a particular view towards entanglement theory, quantum error correction, certification/verification of quantum devices and the implementation of these concepts in state-of-the-art quantum technologies.
The project is anticipated to start in January 2023 and the call will initially be open until 30th September 2022, but applications received thereafter will be considered until the position is filled.
Requirements: You are expected to hold an MSc (or equivalent) degree in (theoretical) physics, computer science or a related area or to complete such a degree before joining the group. You will work on pertinent research questions together with both junior and senior researchers, in a group that values and fosters a conscientious and inclusive work environment. You will be able to acquire/hone relevant technical (mathematical tools, theoretical physics, programming) and soft skills (scientific writing, presentations at seminars and conferences) during the project. A background in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum optics, machine learning, or related fields will be most useful but is not a prerequisite.

How to apply

Application: If you are interested in applying please send an email to nicolai.friis@tuwien.ac.at and include (in pdf format): 1. An academic CV: please include links to your ORCID, google scholar, or similar pages, a list of publications, as well as the names and contact details (affiliation and email) of 2 references 2.
